What small studios do that the big ones won't

August 23, 2026 · Marta Bergström

The reason we focus on indie mobile games isn't snobbery, it's that small teams keep surprising us. A three-hour adventure like Hollow Lantern simply doesn't get made inside a big publisher, because a short, finite game doesn't fit the usual plans.

Small studios can swing for an idea and let it be exactly as long as it needs to be. That's how you get something with a clear vision and a confident ending instead of endless padding.

It does mean rough edges. Indie games can be buggy at launch, light on content, or clearly built by someone wearing every hat at once. We try to be fair about that while still rewarding ambition.

When a tiny team nails it, though, the result sticks with you longer than most polished blockbusters. That's the stuff we want to point you toward.
